Safety Actions Taken By the University

KAJANG: Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman Sungai Long Campus as a city campus had faced quite a number of safety issues within their compound. The University had put much effort to make the University as safe as possible.

Mister Zainudin Bin Mustaffa, Head of Department of Safety and Security said that this University and other Universities, be in the public or private University will always have a Department of Safety and Security, and this department is very very important, I repeat very Important, which to ensure the University is safe and safe in term of safety and also security. If with the absent of it, the student, staff, the parents will not be safe and will be doubting the safety of the University. That is our prime agenda and of course of any University.

“There’s a few safety concern from the University main from Department of Safety and Security. “Role and task is to ensure a safe, secure and healthy learning/teaching environment with the campus. To secure and protect the moveable/fixed assets of UTAR as well as those of the staff/students and other stake-holders. Every day, I will brief the guard, to check on student IDs, but not to make it difficult for the students, is because nowadays we can’t differentiate a friend and a foe. Sometimes in many university where so many student come in and out, if thing is loss of item is still ok, but loss of life, it will reduce the confident of the parents towards UTAR. We will always respond instantly to any emergency situation.” He said.

Mister Zainudin added that they are currently upgrading the security of the campus, tightening the access quality of people going in and out of the University, only letting those with IDs and some visitors that came for other businesses. They have installed several CCTV around the entry point and planning to have more in the future. Not only that but they are also boosting up the frequency of the guard patrolling the premises, from 3 times per day to 2 times per hour. On top of that, they are going to replace new walkie-talkie for all the guards as communication is very important. With the help of walkie-talkie, if there’s anything that happen and the guards can respond to it with efficiency. Last but not least, there’s a Mobile Patrol app in progress, this app can help LIVE trace the movement of patrolling of the guards, this app have gone through the pilot run in September 2016 until today. This app was proudly developed by ex-UTARian.

Safety issues outside of UTAR compound is the concern of Department of Safety and Security as long as it involves UTAR student. “Few cases happened at the student’s hostel, for example like molesting cases, snatch cases, stalking and flasher. DSS will get a statement and follow up the case and bring the student to the Police Department and make a report to give information and assist to solve the case.” He said.

Mister Zainuddin added that they have patrol every day, mobile area patrol with motorcycle within the boundary and also vertical patrol. Not only that, we only educate the student on safety and security about the awareness, with the help of Student Representative Council (SRC) to help spread the awareness. Having a security group of all the condominium and housing area. To share the information and to respond to any situation. Technology had help to make the safety and security much better and more efficient.

Safety service provided by the Department of Safety and Security of University is not well appreciated as people always think they are not doing their job well, we should appreciate all the guard as it is not easy to stay awake and alert 24/7 for anything that could happen.
