Student Feel Unsafe.
KAJANG: Students are not aware of who and what emergency hotline to call, despite that several sexual harassment and peeping cases were reported in last three months.
Students’ safety had become something to concern about especially after the sexual harassment incident happened in November 2016 around Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman Sungai Long.
This case had cause fear and students are worried about their safety, especially for those who stay around the campus area. Chuah Jin Shaun, 22, currently a student of International Business course said that he did
aware of the sexual harassment case that happened last year. “Although I am a male but I felt unsafe too. It’s not like female is the only target for criminal,” said Chuah. “I will choose to walk back to my hostel earlier and will walk together with my friends if it is too late,” he added.
Pang Yueh Pien, 21, also a student of International Business course gave her opinion on this issue. “I am living in Cypress Condominium and it roughly took me 5 to 7 minutes to walk back from the campus to my hostel,” she said. She added that despite the near distance between her hostel and the campus, she is aware of the needs to be alert when walking alone. “I will make sure I have something in my hand to hold with as a weapon to defend myself when things happen,” said by Tan Kai Wen, 22, a Civil Engineering student. “I will suggest that the university should not have classes until or after 7 p.m because it is too late for students who need to walk back to their hostel and some paths have broken streetlights that will threaten students’ safety,” he added. Choo Kuen Cheng, 21, UTAR Student Representative Council, said that the university will provide help to students whenever they need help. "We had set up a community across all the condominium and housing area that contain students that stays inside, with that community, we can get first hand information on whatever thing that happen," he added. Some suggest to the university that more talks on students’ safety to create awareness among students. Students themselves have to do their part in keeping themselves safe, like having a pepper spray in their bag or a small alarm to alert their surrounding when they are in danger.
